Passing of a Prophet

On Sunday night, as we were getting the kids ready for bed, my mom called with the news that Gordon B. Hinckley, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints had passed away. Tears sprang to my eyes as I thought of this sweet man leaving this earth. At the same time, I remember how frail he has looked in the last year, and how tirelessly he has worked in serving his fellowmen. He is ready for a rest, and the chance to see his sweetheart again.

He is such an amazing man, and has been the prophet for most of my adult life. He is also special to me because we share the same middle name--Bitner. He and my grandfather are first cousins-so we're family! =) I remember meeting him at a (very large) family reunion in Salt Lake City, and shaking his hand and seeing his smile up close. I could feel that he was a prophet of God. I was so happy to claim my (distant) relation to this great man, and I always wanted to be a little better because of it.

I am thankful for his testimony of our Savior, and his wisdom and guidance over the years. I will miss the twinkle in his eye when he expressed humor and his joy for life...his cute karate chop on the podium when he really wanted to emphasize a point...and his love for the people of the Church.
